The Atkins Diet – Is It Really Good For YOU?

This piece is fully dedicated the very popular Atkins dieting program. We want to objectively look at the
merits and demerits of this diet and allow you be the judge.

If you’ve been living anywhere within or close to the Western hemisphere you’ve have certainly heard of the extremely advertised dieting program called the Atkins diet. The hype behind its promotion was strong at a time that till day it remains the most advertised of all the dieting programs.

I can’t really if it can be considered as the most successful diet ever, but the Atkins diet, through its hyped dramas, has managed to attract millions of people to try it out at some point or another.

This fact is on record. Actually, it was recorded that, in the UK well over three (3) million people gave the Atkins diet a chance around 2003 when it assumed the highest level of hype.

The essential concept that is being used to drive the Atkins diet plan is cutting down on the carbohydrates, while allowing dieters to eat high-fat food. The fact that you’re allowed to eat cheese, eggs and steaks while dieting attracts people to it like bees to honey.

Can you blame them?

After all this was a dream diet! Can you also by-pass a wonderful opportunity of enjoying a good meal of eggs and ham breakfast while losing weight at the same time? You can bet not many people will. But you’re not allowed to eat salad or bread with that steak, which turns a real problem after few days or so. Can you really stay eating meat without touching any vegetables?

The basic theory exposed

The underlining concept is that cutting out the carbohydrates will compel your body to use the stored fat so as to achieve the energy required for the day. What does means to you? Simple - you get to eat no potatoes, no milk, no bread, no fruits, no pastries, no pasta, no rice, and no vegetables. And obviously you’re not allowed to drink soft drink or eat junk foods.

The Atkins diet comes in 4 stages, thus:

The FIRST Stage:

You’re allowed to eat foods such as fish, chicken, red meat, cream, cheese, mayonnaise, butter and eggs. This is going to be your only food for the first two weeks, which are called the Induction Phase…

The SECOND Stage:

This stage is called Ongoing Weight Loss and focus to let you increase the intake of carbohydrates by 5 grams each day, starting from the fundamental 20 grams each day specified by the Induction Phase. You must find out exactly amount of carbohydrates that can be gained before the body is unable to lose between 1 and 3 pounds per week.

This process is called Critical Carbohydrate Level for Losing Weight and now the sum of carbs stops growing and is designed to continue until you almost reach the expected weight. Now, with about five to ten pounds reaming to loss get prepared to move into the third stage.

The THIRD Stage:

This stage is called Pre-Maintenance where you are to increase the carbs you eat by 10 grams each day so as to slow down the weight loss process. How? By eating about 30 grams of pasta per day!

The FOURTH Stage:

This last stage is called Lifetime Maintenance. It entails eating around 90 grams of carbs each day for a lifetime - for as long as you live. But can you actually be discipline to live on less than 100 grams for the rest of your life?

Though some few did fine on this diet, but the truth is that, the Atkins diet is full of flaws and has been known to carve one form of injury to another on many users. For example, the high-protein content sent infection on the kidneys of some people, while some people battled with heart problems as a result of the fat foods intake.

That is not all - you can expect to be visited with general weakness and dizziness as your body will be tuned to starvation frequency due to denial of carbohydrates. Any more problems? Yes, by taking away the high-fiber vegetables and fruit you must be ready to contend constipation as part of the problems of the Atkins diet.
